Caro & Sergio

Villa Bokeh

A wedding story

Groom dips Caro into a kiss under twilight trees in the gardens of Villa Bokeh, Antigua Guatemala — editorial destination wedding portrait at dusk.

How they met

Caro and Sergio met through a small group of friends who all ended up traveling together one summer. By the time the trip ended, they had already started seeing each other on the side, and the relationship grew from there. Nala, their golden retriever, joined them a couple of years in. From the day they brought her home, it was clear she would be part of every important moment, including this one. When they started planning the wedding, the only firm condition was that Nala would walk the rings down the aisle.

The day

The day belonged to all three of them. Caro got ready in one of Villa Bokeh's pavilion suites, surrounded by close friends and Nala lying on the rug with the kind of patience that only golden retrievers manage on a wedding morning. Sergio and his groomsmen got dressed nearby. Rolando Ramazzini's florals were already in place by midmorning, working with the natural lines of Villa Bokeh's gardens.

The ceremony was held outdoors, with the volcanoes on the horizon and a tight semicircle of guests around the altar. When it came time for the rings, Nala walked down the aisle on her own with the small velvet pouch tied to her collar, and the entire ceremony paused for the kind of laughter that nobody plans for. The reception moved to the pool deck for cocktails, and dinner was served at long tables under string lights. Nala spent most of the night accepting attention from every guest who walked past her.

At the venue

Villa Bokeh's gardens, infinity pool, and open pavilions gave us room to move at the natural pace of the day. Muckay structured the flow so that the property's three main areas each had a chapter: gardens for the ceremony, pool deck for cocktails, dining hall for dinner and dancing. Nala had access to all of them.

Photographer's note

Caro and Sergio wanted a wedding that included the people, and the dog, who had been with them through everything. Villa Bokeh is built for that kind of day. The photographs from this one make me smile every time I open the gallery.
